Suds and Spuds: local beer and local veggies
Stop the presses. Got another press release for ya:
Wolverine State Brewing Co. and Sunseed Farm are teaming up to bring great beer and great vegetables to Ann Arborites. On Tuesday nights from 5-7 p.m. beginning Jan. 24, Wolverine State will host one of Sunseed Farm’s Community Supported Agriculture pickups in the Tap Room at 2019 W. Stadium Blvd., Ann Arbor. CSA members (of legal drinking age) will receive discounted pints on Tuesdays, and the two businesses plan to offer CSA and Mug Club bundle deals during the spring and summer months.
“We’re so excited to bring these two worlds together,” says Mackenzie Meter, Marketing Manager at Wolverine State. “Helping to foster growth and awareness of Sunseed Farm’s CSA program and at the same time introduce new customers to our brews is the perfect relationship.”
Tomm Becker, owner of Sunseed Farm, says “when folks pick up their weekly share of vegetables, it’s already a good time to hang out and talk. Having a nice indoor space, friendly bartenders and delicious beer on tap? That’s hard to resist.”
Wolverine customers have been inadvertently supporting Sunseed Farm since 2011. Back when the brewery was in its infancy, brewmaster Oliver Roberts sought out local farms to pick up some of the thousands of pounds of spent grain produced by the brewing process. Sunseed Farm was an early supporter — the farm wanted to add fertility and organic matter to its fields, and it has been picking up grain for that purpose ever since.
Sunseed Farm is a family-owned four-season vegetable farm six miles northwest of downtown Ann Arbor, growing for its year-round CSA members, restaurants, and wholesale customers since 2009. Sunseed has pioneered winter hoophouse growing in the Ann Arbor area, uses growing practices that promote soil health and biodiversity, and pays its workers a living wage.
Wolverine State Brewing Co. opened its doors in November 2010. As Michigan’s first and only all-lager microbrewery, Wolverine State has developed recipes for nearly 70 lagers and introduces new beers every year. One of those beers, Raucher Smoked Lager, won a Gold Medal at the Great American Beer Festival in October 2016 and a Bronze Medal from the World Beer Cup in May 2016. The Tap Room is open seven days a week, and Wolverine brews can be found in local stores and across Michigan.
