Photos from an anti-Trumpcare rally

I spent years hunkered in newsrooms while reporters and photographers went into the fray to collect stories for me to slap on the page. One tiny upside to owning a publication that can’t afford a real photographer is I get to play photojournalist at select moments. Such as when Emily Sippola, who took part in an ANNtourage awhile back, says, “Hey, can you cover my protest?” On its Facebook page, the event was “Stop Trumpcare: Rally and Vigil to Protect Healthcare Access.”

Sippola is outspoken about the need for universal health care. Speakers on Thursday echoed her call not just to maintain the Affordable Care Act and reject the Republican-sponsored American Health Care Act, but to push for a single-payer plan that guarantees health coverage for all.

Emily Sippola of We the People organized Thursday’s protest at the Federal Building in downtown Ann Arbor. She teamed up with Huron Valley Democratic Socialists.

Sippola with a sign she made. She spoke of her experience with breast cancer and the medication that keeps the cancer from coming back.

Sonja Greenfield is a nurse practitioner in Ann Arbor.

Sippola speaks before around 60 people who came out for the protest.
